Student volunteers needed for New Family Information Night. Information Night for next fall’s 9th graders and their families will take place on Thursday April 26 6-7:30pm.  We need volunteers to help guide parents to the F Building and to help staff the table at the events. Prom also has a Dine and Donate event this Friday, April 13th between 4PM to 8PM. Come in to the Chipotle at 2610 Fifth Street and tell the cashier you are supporting our cause to make sure that 50% of all purchases will be donated to ASTI.

 

Support your classmates as they compete in the League of Women Voters and COA scholarship program speech tournament this Friday 4/13 from 5-6:30pm in the F-Building Pit at College of Alameda! Speakers will perform in alphabetical order by last name: 1) Amy Chu, 2) Olivia Harrison, 3) Eman Khatri, 4) Yongqi Kuang, 5) Zohra Rahimi, 6) Serena Woon.  You call all head over to Chipotle for dinner afterward to support PROM!

 

ASB: Hello! For those who are interested in running for ASB positions this year, the orientation is THIS FRIDAY at lunch! Coming to the orientation is mandatory if you plan on running for a position, so please let Joey, Sybil, Anne, Saphia, Yongqi or O’philia know if you absolutely can’t make it so we can make sure you get an application. Come to learn about what each role entails, and we encourage you to come even if you’re not sure whether or not you want to run!

Juniors:  If you are planning to complete an Associate’s Degree before graduating from ASTI, you should schedule an appointment with a COA counselor this semester to review your remaining Associate’s Degree requirements to make sure you are on path to your goal. 

 

Featuring ASTI students Rasarea Chan and Emmett Campbell as Sheila Bryant and Mark Anthony!

Come see Encinal’s “A Chorus Line” on April 13th, 14th, 20th, 21st at 8pm and April 22nd at 2pm! The musical follows seventeen dancers all vying for a spot in a Broadway musical. Through an unusual and uncomfortable audition, each dancer reveals their individual story: tragic childhoods, casual confessions, and personal revelations to director, Zach. Based on real Broadway dancers’ testimonies, “A Chorus Line” is a universal story that anyone who’s ever had dreams and aspirations can relate to.

 

Prom is seeking adult volunteers to aid in setting up, cleaning, and running the event as well as chaperones to oversee it. If your parents are interested in doing so, our Prom is May 12th from 7-11pm at the Chabot Space and Science Center. As the year comes to an end, and we bid our seniors farewell, we also see the rise of new student leaders. ASTI PTSA is going to have elections on April 19th from 6:30-7:30pm for the 2018-2019 board officers. PTSA is a community based organization, and we support the school in many ways. We have seeded the garden, acquired the bike rakes, and we fund the school printer…etc. There are parent and student positions available so please inform your parents if they would like to join. Keep in mind that you are agreeing to attend PTSA meetings once a month from 6:30-7:30 if you do choose to run. 10th graders take the English & Math assessment tests at COA today, Wednesday, 4/11 and tomorrow, Thursday, 4/12.  Check School Loop & signs around campus for your scheduled assessment date.  On the day of your assessment, meet Ms. Jurkovich in the quad at 12:50pm & bring your COA ID card with you.

 

ASTI’s College Registration Date is Friday, April 27th!

11th Graders:  Concurrent enrollment forms for Summer & Fall and Schedule Planners for Fall 2018 are due by this Friday, April 13th at 3:00pm.  Both sides of the schedule planner must be filled out.  Students who turn in incomplete forms, or forms after their deadline, will be placed at the back of the enrollment line for their class. Concurrent enrollment forms and schedule planners are available at the front of the office and were emailed to you on Monday.  Check your School Loop email for more details.

ASTI Gala is coming up on Saturday, April 21! This also means that we will need student volunteers to help come set up before the event and clean up after the event! Sign up on the office whiteboard! Hope to see you all there!

COA’s Health Center is offering free Spring 2018 Wellness Workshops!  Events are held in the F-building pit at 12:00—feel free to bring & eat lunch:

  • Thursday, April 12th:  How to Get a Better Night’s Sleep—How much sleep do we need?  What are the tools and tricks to getting the most out of our sleep?
  • Thursday, April 19th:  Positive Couples Communication—Did you know that there are evidence based strategies for successful couples to maintain happiness and satisfaction?  What are some easy tools you can put into practice today that will improve your relationship communication?
  • Thursday, May 3rd:  Intro. To Mindfulness—What is mindfulness?  Learn some basic breathing & relaxation strategies that you can use at home.  Take part in a guided mindfulness exercise (if you choose).
  • Thursday, May 17th:  Self-Care—As the semester moves towards final assignments and exams, how do you take care of yourself & relieve stress?  Come share your strategies & learn some new tools for managing the pressure and concerns you have at this time of year.
  • Weekly Drop-In Dance Fitness:  Every Tuesday from 9-10am in the COA Dance Studio:  G-111.  A high energy dance workout for anyone who wants to get the heart rate up while getting down to some good tunes.  No dance for fitness experience required—all shapes, sizes, and ages.

 

It's finally PROM SEASON!! This year ASTI Prom will take place on May 12th 7-11pm at Chabot Space and Science Center! Bring money to school because we will be selling tickets every day at lunch starting today! Hurry and buy your tickets because prices will keep going up!

Starting prices are:

Upperclassmen: $90 for 2 people or $50 for 1 person

Underclassmen: $50 for 2 people or $30 for 1 person

 

Seniors:  Make sure you all check your to-do lists with your college accounts for the colleges you’ve applied to.  Monitor your to-do lists frequently and be mindful of any deadlines for transcript submissions, or if your college tells you that you did not meet A-G requirements.  See Ms. Jurkovich ASAP if you have any questions or if any issues arise.  Your applications could be cancelled or withdrawn if you do not submit documents required of you by the deadlines given.

Friday is a modified schedule for Sports-O-Rama.  Attendance is required for all students, unless you have a scheduled college class.

It will take place this Friday, from 1 pm to 3 pm.  So make sure to be there dressed in your class color (freshmen - orange; red- sophomores; green - juniors; blue - seniors) and show class spirit! Make sure to talk to your class representative if you want to participate in Sports-O-Rama activities. Get your heads in the game, may the best class win. See you all there!

 

This Friday is Sports-O-Rama and what better way to cool down after a day of heated competition than with frozen yogurt! PTSA is hosting a fundraiser at Yogurtland this Friday from 3-7pm. Just present a flyer or a picture or it on your phone during checkout.   Flyers are in the office and on the Facebook page. Come and support PTSA!

Friday, March 16th is Motivation Day!  Motivation Day will take place from 1-3:00pm on the 1st floor of the F Building and students will hear from current college students and career professionals from variety of universities & careers.  Attendance for all students is mandatory.  Students are only excused if they have a scheduled college class.  Attendance will be taken.

 

Are you looking for a leadership opportunity? The MOSAIC Youth Leadership Project is a great program where you can serve as a leader in our community! The project is recruiting more Youth Leaders for this coming spring season! It provides extensive training in diversity, empathy, and conflict-resolution for young adults who form a vibrant cross-cultural community and serve as mentors for the 4th and 5th graders at Mosaic’s Outdoor Project. To learn more about the program next Monday on March 19th during lunch. The room is TBD. There will be treats!! Hope to see you all there. Looking for a community-minded group to push for social change and provide individual support? Come to ASTI's Queer Straight Alliance! Our meetings consist of working on long-term projects focused on education and awareness, and support circles to discuss relevant topics and hang out. Whether you come for one meeting or for one hundred meetings, everyone is welcome! We also have great snacks. Meetings at lunch every Tuesday in Ms. Campbell's classroom.

Community Service Opportunity: In The Mix April 28th at Island High School from 11-3 is an event focused on the mixed race experience in Alameda and the organizers hope to include the voice of current Alameda youthThe event will consist of a number of breakout sessions and group conversations about mixed race related issues.  Speakers include Lisa Bonta Sumil, Natasha Walls, Megan Emiko Scott, and Janet Stickman.  They seek students to talk about their individual experiences in Alameda as a mixed race youth. Alameda Board of Education member Jennifer Williams is on the planning committee and has asked for our support in finding high school students to come and share their experiences as a mixed race student in Alameda. Today, Wednesday, March 7th is a special modified schedule for a No Place for Hate lesson on microaggressions during 4th period.  Please practice RISE as you engage in important No Place for Hate workshops today.

 

Don’t forget to buy your yearbooks this Friday at lunch! The price is still $55, but it will be going up soon.

 

Beautification day is this Friday from 3-4pm! Come volunteer and get community service hours for cleaning up our school community. There will be popsicles for all volunteers!

 

Friday, March 7th is a late start day for students to accommodate a monthly staff meeting.

It's March and you know what that means... it's spirit month!!  Spirit month consists of a series of events that take place throughout the month of March that earn your class spirit points!  We will be kicking off spirit month with the first event in which your class will be able to earn spirit points: Cake Wars. Cake Wars will be held at lunch this Friday, March 9th in the quad. Come watch your peers battle for the prettiest cake of them all and support your class! If you would like to participate, ask your class rep! Good luck!!

Alameda Board of Education member Jennifer Williams is on the planning committee and has asked for our support in finding high school students to come and share their experiences as a mixed race student in Alameda. Don’t forget to buy your yearbooks this Friday at lunch! The price is still $55, but it will be going up soon.

 

Seniors:  If you will be graduating with an AA/AS Degree, you must petition for your degree with a COA counselor.  The deadline to petition for your degree is Friday, March 16th.  You may see any COA counselor to petition for your degree. It’s recommended you make an appointment soon and not wait until the last week to petition, as appointment slots fill up.  You do not need to file your IGETC by March 16th; you should file your IGETC once you have decided where you will attend college.  Email Ms. Jurkovich if you have any questions!

 

Juniors/Seniors:  You are now able to meet with any COA counselor when scheduling an appointment.  You are no longer restricted to seeing the ASTI counselor at COA.  When you are scheduling your appointment with COA counseling, let them know you are an ASTI student, and the reason for scheduling an appointment.

 

Seniors:  The deadline to submit your 2018-2019 FAFSA/Dream Act Application is Friday, March 2nd.  You should ALL submit a FAFSA or Dream Act Application, regardless of where you plan to attend next year.  If you plan to continue studying at COA after you graduate, list the College of Alameda as one of your schools on your FAFSA/Dream Act.  Visit or email Ms. Jurkovich if you have any questions.

 

Juniors:  You should all sign up for a spring SAT with Essay exam!  The next test will be on May 5th; the registration deadline is April 6th.  Register at collegeboard.org; see Ms. Jurkovich if you qualify for a fee waiver.

 

Sophomores:  On Thursday, March 1st, and Friday, March 2nd you will go to the computer lab during your PE period to create your two year plans.  If you do not have PE, please go to the computer lab during your open period.

It aims to encourage women and girls to get involved by having a diverse group of local and national female politicians, influencers, activists, and others come together for an evening of speeches, discussion, and inspiration. There will be food, networking opportunities, activities, and more fun! The goal for the event is to incite youth engagement (and especially young women’s engagement) in politics. Join in inspiring the next generation to catalyze them towards positive political and social change. REGISTER on Eventbrite by searching for “Political and Proud” in the search bar.”

Today is RISE Reboot Day!  In each of your classes today, you will be engaging in lessons centered around one of the RISE expectations:  Reflection, Integrity, Safety, & Empathy.  Please join Advisory at lunch for a fun way to kickoff RISE for the Spring 2018 semester!  If it’s raining, we’ll be in a classroom.  Join us at lunch and win candy prizes!

 

Thank you to everyone who donated cans to the canned food drive last year! Nonetheless, it was a contest, so...congrats to the Freshmen class for donating the MOST canned foods to the canned food drive! The hot cocoa with some sweet treats party will take place this Friday at lunch.

 

Conduct on the COA Campus: COA staff recently showed me a rolling chair and a large piece of wood that ASTI students pulled out of the refuse pile over to behind portable 4, 5, and 6.  It appears that students sat in the chair and used the wood (which had a shiny reflective surface) to light photos. I was also told that students pulled items out of that refuse pile to create a skateboard ramp recently. A reminder that ASTI students:

  1. Should not mess with the refuse pile over behind the dumpster
  1. Should  not play in the driveway
  2. Always wear a helmet and be safe
  3. If you move something, put it back where you found it
  4. Park Lime Bikes responsibly.  ASTI students may not ride Lime Bikes around campus during classes. ALL ASTI students riding Lime Bikes around campus at lunch or before/after school must have helmets & park the bike responsibly when done riding (do not block sidewalks, roadways or disabled access).

Failure to follow these guidelines will result in all students losing these privileges on the ASTI and COA campuses.  Please remind your classmates of this if you see them disregarding these guidelines. 

 

11th Graders:  All 11th graders should go to the computer lab during 2nd period on Friday, January 26th to receive their PSAT Scores.  All juniors are expected to attend unless they have a scheduled college class.

 

10th Graders:  Please go to the computer lab during your PE period on Friday, January 26th to receive your PSAT scores & get set up with free SAT prep through Khan Academy.  You will be excused from PE this day.

No Place For Hate December Resolution: I pledge  from  this  day  forward  to  do my  best  to  combat  prejudice  and  to stop  those who, because of hate or ignorance, would hurt anyone or violate their civil rights.  

 

11/12th graders:  Please be in the quad at 7:45am on Tuesday, January 16th to pick up your Spring 2018 ASTI schedule.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: PTSA is hosting a Giftwrapping Fundraiser at the Barnes and Nobles in Dublin (4972 Dublin Blvd, Dublin, CA 94568) on Monday 12/18/17 and 12/20/17. Hours will be provided, so please come to support ASTI as well as help others ease the stress of the holiday season. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Rasarea, Joey, or Yongqi.

 

PTSA is also hosting a See's Candies Lollypop Fundraiser! Buy candy from sellers all over campus for only $1! If you are also interested in selling a box, please contact Rasarea, Joey, or Yongqi for a liability form and box of candy. The fundraiser will end the week after Winter Break!

 

The members of the Fine Arts Club have worked very hard since the beginning of the year to put together a body of artwork to be displayed at the West End Library. Their art is now up and open for anyone to see through the month of December if you are interested. Please stop by and show your support for ASTI artists! If you'd like to take part in the next show or simply create art for yourself, feel free to come join the fun in Room 1 during lunch on Wednesdays.

 

Performing Arts Club will be having karaoke during lunch this Wednesday in Rod’s room! Please come and sing your hearts out!

 

Jingle grams, jingle grams, jingle all the wayyyy. Oh what fun it is to buy one winter gram todayyy! That's right! The holidays are coming up! What's a better way to kick off winter break than with sending some love to your friends (or yourself) through a winter gram?!  This week is your last chance to buy an ASTI winter gram, so buy yours today! They contain some sweet treats, an optional personalized message, holiday goodies, all adorably wrapped together. It is sure to make your receiver smile. It is $3 for a small winter gram. $5 for a large winter gram. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Buy 2 large winter grams for $9. We'll be selling during lunch and after school :)

 

The TOY DRIVE is now in full swing, and we’re trying something new this year. In previous years, we’ve struggled to fill the box with toys.  This year, we’d like to try an idea that Ms. Krasky came up with. If you’d like to help fill the box but are too busy to shop, we have a cash donations jar for toys in the office.  Stop by and drop in some money and we will use it to buy toys for the box. If we collect $1 per student then we will be able to buy a generous donation of toys for the box.  Of course, you can also bring in new unwrapped toys for the box. Please donate what you can!

Lime Bikes: ASTI students may not ride Lime Bikes around campus during classes. ALL ASTI students riding Lime Bikes around campus at lunch or before/after school must have helmets & park the bike responsibly when done riding (do not block sidewalks, roadways or disabled access).

Come every Monday in Ms. Campbell's room and join us for snacks, presentations, and writing sprints. The person who writes the most words by the end of the month will win a fun prize!  So remember that November is not only important for UC and CSU apps, but also NaNoWriMo! See you there!

Seniors:  Your UC & CSU Applications are due on November 30th!  You have only 11 school days left until your applications are due! Attend one more college application workshop in the computer lab on Wednesday, November 15th at 1:00pm to get your application questions answered.

 

To BEE or not to BEE… there? That is… not the question you should be asking when going to ASTI’s Spelling Bee because you should always go to school events! (Attendance will be taken and absences confirmed).  Friday November 17th, this year’s Spelling Bee will finally be taking place! It will be held in the F building on the ground floor at 1:30pm— don’t forget there’s a modified schedule on that day. All candidates that had proceeded into the final round will receive a slip and must come to the F building on time.

 

Great American Smokeout: On Thursday November 16th, we will be having the Great American Smokeout. (It’s not a Barbecue but it’s Barbecute!!!) Come join us for a game of Hot Smokin’ Potato during lunch in the quad. You will learn some important facts about smoking and win awesome prizes! We look forward to seeing you all!

 

The Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth, and their Families (ACCYF), Alameda Firefighters, Alameda Food Bank, Alameda Red Cross Youth, and other Community Organizations are working in partnership to launch the 2017 Alameda Firefighters Toy Program. The program assures that all low-income Alameda families who sign up at the Alameda Food Bank will receive age-appropriate Holiday Toys for their children ages 0 - 12 and Gift Cards for their youth ages 13 - 16. A collection box is now in the ASTI office; it will be picked up the morning of December 19th. Families must sign up at the Food Bank to receive toys. All families needing toys are invited to sign up at the Alameda Food Bank between now and December 9th. Info at Alamedafoodbank.org. Toys will be distributed on Thursday, December 21st.

 

"Beyond Everyone Belongs Here" Workshop – TONIGHT November 15thRecent anti-Semitic and racist incidents in our community have led parents/guardians to ask what AUSD is doing to teach anti-bullying, track hate incidents, and create positive school climates. This workshop will give AUSD families a chance to hear about AUSD’s approach to promoting inclusion, as well as brainstorm solutions to this growing local and national problem. The forum will be held on Wednesday, November 15th from 6:30pm – 8:30pm in the Alameda High School Cafeteria. 

 

10th graders who wish to take a college course in the spring must have at least a 3.0 ASTI GPA.  Taking a college class curing the 10th grade is not required or recommended by ASTI.  High school coursework should be prioritized.  10th graders may not take more than one course during the spring 2017 semester, and a college course must not conflict with ASTI classes.  If you are a 10th grader registering for a Spring 2017 class and are not presently taking a Fall 2017 college class, you must submit a new application to COA at cccapply.org.

 

All students registering for a college class Spring 2017:  You must all complete online orientation with COA in order to register.  Failure to complete orientation will place a hold on your account and you will not be allowed to register until you have completed the orientation.  Complete orientation at:  http://alameda.peralta.edu/orientation/online-orientation/

9th Graders:  9th grade Family Info Night will be held next Tuesday, November 14th at 6:00pm in Room D-237 on the College of Alameda campus.  All 9th graders should attend the information night with a parent or guardian to learn important information regarding completing high school graduation requirements, A-G requirements needed for college admissions, optional requirements available as early college high school students, and preparing for four year college.  Please prioritize your attendance at this event.

Spring 2017 College Registration Information:

ASTI’s college registration date is Friday, December 1st.  The Spring 2017 schedule of classes is available at passport.peralta.edu.  Seniors must turn in concurrent enrollment forms & spring schedule planners to Ms. Jurkovich next Monday, November 6th by 3pm.  Juniors must turn in concurrent enrollment forms & schedule planners to Ms. Jurkovich by Tuesday, November 7th at 3:00pm.  Concurrent enrollment forms and schedule planners are available at the front of the office and will be emailed over School Loop.  Students who turn in forms after their deadline will be placed at the back of the enrollment line for their class.  If students plan to register for a course that has a prerequisite (all math, English, and most science courses), students must attach a sticky note to their form with the class they are enrolling in and how they have met the prerequisite. For example, if you plan to take English 5 Spring, you would write “English 5—met prereq with English 1A Fall 2017” or “Biology 1A—Chemistry 1A complete Summer 2017.”  If you need a prerequisite cleared, and do not write it on a sticky note, your registration will be significantly delayed.  If you plan to take an intersession course, this must be submitted on a separate concurrent enrollment form for the Fall term.  Winter intersession adds to fall units—if you go over 11 units, you will be charged per unit fees that ASTI cannot cover.

Seniors:  Attend the Cash for College Financial Aid Workshop tomorrow night Thursday, November 2nd at 6:30pm at Encinal High School’s Library/Media Center.  All 12th graders should attend the workshop with a parent to learn about filling out your FAFSA or Dream Act Application.  This will be the only financial aid night offered this school year.  Students and parents should bring copies of their W-2s, tax returns, and bank statements from 2016 to help them fill out the FAFSA/Dream Act.  If your family does not file taxes and/or receives public assistance bring these forms with you.  You will not share these personal forms with anyone—you will use them to help you answer FAFSA/Dream Act questions. Spanish translation will be available.

 

Sophomores:  Sophomore Family Info Night will be held tomorrow night Thursday, November 2nd at 6:00pm in Room D-237 at COA.  All 10th graders and a parent/guardian should attend to learn important information about preparing for four year college admissions, and the transition to full time community college students next year.  It’s important that all 10th graders prioritize their attendance at this event.  Chinese translation will be available for families at all information nights this year.

The first ten people to buy tickets will also get goody bags at the dance, and ticket prices will rise at the door to $5 each, so be sure to buy your tickets this week!!

This upcoming week (10/23) is spirit week!!! Classes will earn points for every lunch activity they win.  Classes earn points for dressing up—Advisory will visit all 4th period classes and for those who can’t make it or don’t have fourth period, please send in pictures! (Via School Loop email to Evelyn Pham or Vicki Vien or Clarissa Wu).

  • Monday is “I woke up like this” so get comfy and wear your PJs! The lunchtime event will be “breakfast rush” where reps from each class make breakfast, blindfolded.
  • Tuesday is Cowboys (Freshmen & Juniors) Vs. Aliens (Sophomores & Seniors), the lunchtime event is “how much you can remember about your partner?” We’ll give you a set of questions to ask your partner and you’ll have to memorize as much as you can, because we’ll test you on your memory.
  • Wednesday is Character Day so dress up as your favorite character! The lunchtime event will be Heads Up, so we’ll give each class rep a deck of cards, and their partner has to explain what the word is.
  • Thursday is Loco Logos Day! Dress up as or with a logo (ex: Nike, Adidas, sports teams, college teams, etc). The event is a logo contest, so each class has to make up their own logo, and will present it on this day. Please make it appropriate, teachers will be judging!
  • Friday is Class Color Day! Classes will wear their class colors, Freshmen are Orange, Sophomores are Red, Juniors are Green, and Seniors are Blue! The event will be Dance Pong, each class will have two reps, one person will be the class mascot and they can take turns throwing the ping pong balls into the cups. Under the cups will be a song or dance you have to sing or dance to.  Join us every day at lunch!!! 

 

Spirit Week also means it’s time for Penny Wars! Each class will have a container in the office they can put pennies into. (The more pennies in your class jar the more points!) You can try to sabotage the other classes by putting other coins or bills in other classes jars! Ex: A Sophomore putting a dollar in a Freshmen jar means the Freshmen class will lose points.

Junior Family Info Night:  All 11th graders & their families should attend Junior Family Info Night on Thursday, October 19th at 6:00pm in room D-237 at COA.  This is a crucial event to attend as 11th graders prepare for college admissions next year.  Important information regarding building a balanced college list, SAT/ACT testing timelines, drafting UC Insight Questions, registering with a free online college preparation service, and financial aid will be discussed.  Students absent from Junior Info Night will miss in depth information about the 11th & 12th grade college admissions timeline.  If a student has a college class during the event, a parent/guardian should attend.  Chinese translation will be available for families, too.  Please prioritize your attendance at this event!

 

All seniors:  Please see Ms. Jurkovich in the office to schedule a mandatory senior check in meeting.  Bring your balanced college lists to this meeting.  We will calculate your weighted UC/CSU GPA during this meeting, and discuss the next steps in your application process.

Go Green Tip: Adopt Reusable Bag Practices

 

ASTI Office Hours: Starting this week, the ASTI office will be open Monday-Friday 7:30am-3:30pm. 

 

ASTI’s campus Beautification Day will be held today after school from 3:00-4:00!  It’s not too late to sign up in the office on the white board to volunteer.  Volunteers get community service hours and otter pops & popsicles!  Volunteers should meet in the quad at 3:00 this afternoon for directions on where they’ll be assigned to volunteer. 

 

Back to School Night: Tomorrow 5:15-8pm.  This is a parents-only event; the only students in attendance are those working the event. 

 

11th & 12th Graders: Students enrolled in 6 or more college units will receive a Clipper Card.  Clipper Cards are activated approximately 2 weeks after the start of college classes. If enrollment slips below 6 units, the Clipper Card will deactivate.

 

If you live outside Alameda, please see Ms. Krasky in the office to get an Interdistrict Transfer Agreement. 

 

Bike Security: Peralta Sheriffs recommend a U-Lock for your bicycle. In the past three years, two cable locks have been cut and bikes stolen from the ASTI campus.  Be alert. DO NOT lock your bike to another bike.

School Site Council (SSC) – 2017-18

ASTI is seeking students and parents/guardians who are interested in serving on ASTI’s governance body –School Site Council-- SSC.

 

SSC makes important policy decisions/recommendations, approves/revises the Single School Plan, and guides budgeting.

 

SSC is a wonderful way to participate in the ASTI community if you have limited time; meetings are 1 Thursday per month 5:30-6:30pm; for your convenience, these meetings are followed immediately by PTSA meetings.

 

SSC includes THREE student representative positions and THREE parent/guardian representative positions. Candidates will be asked to provide a BRIEF statement and elections will be held 9.5-9.12.

 

If interested, print and follow the instructions on the attached form OR pick up a hard copy in the office.

11th/12th Graders:  Students who need to request an ASTI course change may do so by filling out a Course Change Request Form in the office.  Course change priority is given to students who must change their schedule due to college course conflicts and/or who need a content course changed.  Student schedules will not be changed for work or internship commitments.  All work and internships must be scheduled outside of your scheduled school day.  If you know you will need a course changed, see Ms. Jurkovich no later than the end of the day today, 8/10. It must be signed by you and your parents/guardians and then returned to the office.

 

ASTI will be featured at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, August 22 at Alameda City Hall from 6:30 until 7:00pm. We need ASTI students to join this event to lead the room in the Pledge of Allegiance. This brief event is eligible for community service credit! Join us and then turn in your form to Ms. Krasky afterward.

  • Only one student at a time may leave a class to use the bathroom.
  • Bathroom passes are required at the discretion of the teacher.
  • When a student leaves the room to use the restroom, he/she must place his/her phone in the box provided for this purpose in each classroom and collect the phone upon return from the restroom.
  • At teacher’s discretion, students may not be allowed to leave a classroom during tests; in the event that a student does leave the room during a test, then he/she must place the test on the teacher’s desk and retrieve it upon return.

Some notes about requests for schedule changes:

 

9th & 10th graders:   If you feel that you are missing a course or were incorrectly placed in math or Spanish, please see Ms. Jurkovich in the office Monday morning.

 

11th & 12th graders:  Schedule change requests may be made after lunch on Monday by filling out a schedule change form and attaching your college schedule along with a course schedule planner to your schedule change form.  Filling out a schedule change request form does not mean that your schedule will be changed.  Schedule changes are only made for students who cannot attend a class they are scheduled in due to conflicting college courses. Students are placed into ASTI courses based on their college course schedule and available space in ASTI courses.  All 11th and 12th graders need to follow the class schedule they are given in the quad on Monday, which may be different from what is on School Loop over the weekend.

ASTI Yearbook won an award!

YearbookLife is thrilled to announce that your school Alameda Science & Technology Institute has won 1st Place - Middle/High Division - in our 2016-2017 Annual Yearbook Contest! This was announced on our Facebook page on Wednesday, June 7. Your prize is a $250 check issued to either your school or your PTA. All of us at YearbookLife are very excited for you and your school and very impressed with all the hard work put into your yearbook.  Congratulations again!

 

ASTI Students Recognized!

Imagine a first grader organizing marches at her school!    Or a high school young man developing after school tutorial programs for elementary school children in different parts of his city. For the fourteenth year, educators throughout California nominated young people for the California Teachers' Association Peace and Justice Caucus Youth Activist Awards.

 

The Oakland, CA, young people who will be honored by the CTA Peace and Justice Caucus are all elementary student.s, from East Oakland Pride and Sequoia Elementary Schools.

 

A first grader, Diana Cardenas of Sequoia, singlehandedly organized her school's first graders to march around the playground at lunch time for a week, carrying their signs for the environment and chanting environmental slogans. Her concern was triggered by studying in Carol Panchash's class about the damage we are doing to our air quality and the environment.

 

The other Sequoia student is Dana Watchorns's fifth grader Jaiya Hall who embodies an inspirational young woman who empowers her peers through her speaking and writing. When her classmates were fearful of the politics unfolding around them Jaiya began speaking and reminded them that they needed to rise up as a community - "together nothing can hurt us". "Women are strong and powerful and that is why I am glad I am a woman." Her efforts shifted how her peers related to the political environment. Additionally she was elected graduation speaker and participated in the MLK Oratorical Fest.

 

Fifth grader, Brian Gonzalez, of East Oakland Pride, has been a real agent for change. He regularly goes to Oakland School Board meetings, speaking powerfully about how the school board needs to focus on student needs such as the Special Ed Reading Clinic which the board is planning on scuttling. He was so outraged by Trump's election that he felt he needed to organize his schoolmates to do something about it. He got together 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to meet at lunch and discuss what they could do.

 

3rd, 4th and 5th grade students at East Oakland Pride, with the support of Special Ed teacher Adi Hoag, became the Super Power Lunch Bunch, meeting at lunch time weekly. The students planned and particated in two marches including the May 1 Worker's and Immigration March, wrote fliers which they passed out and posted in their community, organized all the logistics for the marches, made speeches to the classes at their school to encourage participation, and regularly spoke to the school board.

 

This year, the Peace and Justice Caucus is doing a different kind of ceremony to honor our very special young people. We will have an East Bay gathering and one in Southern California to which their teachers and families are invited.  We will host dinner, the students will receive their trophies, and will have the opportunity to tell about their special projects.

 

ASTI Eleventh grader Ken Der of Alameda will also be honored at this East Bay gathering. Ken created and ran an after school tutoring program at three elementary schools in Alameda.

 

The Southern California youth will be honored at a dinner in Southern California.

 

John Huddleston is an 11th grade student at North Hollywood HS.  Beginning in elementary school, John helped organize student affiliates of Coalition for Educational Justice, a major network of public ed activists fighting for the needs of youth, community and school staff.   He continued this effort through high school, organizing students to attend school board  meetings and other school improvements. He has attended press conferences organized by UTLA and panels on community organizing.

 

 Alexa Huddleston is a 9th grade student at Cleveland HS Humanities Magnet.  She also has organized for CEJ. In addition, she has helped work on resources for AIDS patients and people in poverty, including in Haiti. She is a leader in the "Appreciation and Action for Earth" Club, attending Greenfest in LA to organize against the 'bomb trains' and Phillips 66. This April she was a speaker at a Student Leadership Conference, speaking on global warming as related to China and Japan. Finally, Alexa has been active with the Screen Actors Guild Leadership Council.

 

Thanks to the Oakland Education Association, The United Educators of San Francisco, and West Love Clothiers as well as many individual union members for financial support, so the Peace and Justice Caucus can offer this kind of recognition. Our goal is to encourage young people to see that their efforts make a difference. Empowered youth have a key role in bringing about the change we need to see in our society.

AUSD Schools and Students Win Awards and Honors

Schools and students in the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) have received a number of honors this spring, ranging from national recognition to local awards.

US News & World Report and CBEE Awards

Two Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) high schools received medals in the US News & World Report annual "Best High Schools" report released last month. Alameda High School—which was ranked #618 in the country and #109 in the state—won a Silver Award. Alameda Science and Technology Institute (ASTI), an Early College High School where students take college classes instead of AP classes, won a Bronze Award. (Only Gold and Silver Award winners receive numerical rankings.)

 

Wood Middle School (WMS) and ASTI have also been named to the 2017 Honor Roll of California Business for Education Excellence (CBEE), a professional organization comprised of business leaders committed to improving public education in this state. The designation honors schools that have demonstrated consistently high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement over time, and reduction in achievement gaps.

CBEE designated Wood Middle School (WMS) as a "Star School" because it enrolls a significant number of low-income students but is also high performing and closing the achievement gap. The organization designated ASTI a "Scholar School" because it is a high-performing school that does not enroll significant levels of low-income students.

“I congratulate the students and staff of these two secondary schools for work well done and awards deservedly won,” said Superintendent Sean McPhetridge. “Both schools ranked very well among both state and national high schools. It is enormously gratifying to see this recognition bestowed upon both ASTI and WMS.”

PSAs, Posters, and a Certificate of “Awesomeness”

Many AUSD students (and former students!) also received amazing recognitions this spring. For instance:

 

  • Kaitlin Alcontin, an 11th grader at Encinal Jr. & Sr. High School, was chosen to read a poem about Abigail Adams at a “Hamilton” performance on May 3.
  • A number of students won awards in the Harvey Milk Poem and Poster Contest this year.  Tuesday Bakker (EJSHS) won first prize in the poster contest; Talia Grumet (AHS) and Kirsty Lastra (EJSHS) won Honorable Mentions in that category. Salma Hassan (Bay Farm School) won first prize in the poem contest, and Sofia Coffin and Selena Phu (also of Bay Farm School) won Honorable Mentions. The cash prizes were awarded on Harvey Milk’s birthday (May 22nd) at a ceremony at the main library. Poster printing was donated by the Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth, and their Families.

 

  • Middle and high school students across AUSD also won awards in the Alameda County Office of Education Tobacco Use Prevention Education Public Service Announcements competition. Specifically, Ken Der (ASTI) won 1st place in the audio category, and Yuting Li and Kelly Cai (also ASTI) won second place. Arnold Yoo and Ethan Woon (ASTI) won first place in the photo contest. Ming Gao and Anne Huang (ASTI) won second place in the high school video category; Aneesh Patil (Lincoln Middle School) won third place in the middle school video category.  Cammie Young (ASTI) won first place in the poster contest.

 

  • Nine-year-old Malek Farhan received a “Certificate of Awesomeness” from Mayor Trish Spencer for his quick-thinking action after a classmate fell on her head from the monkey bars. Young Malek helped revive the younger girl by blowing on her face and then ran to get help.

 

  • Last but by no means least, Encinal High School alumna Malaika Fraley and her colleagues at the East Bay Times were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for their coverage on the Ghost Ship fire!

 

“These are stories that should give us faith in our current practices and hope for our future,” McPhetridge says. “These types of honors and recognition showcase the talent and efforts of students and teachers alike. AUSD is proud of the achievements of students, staff, families, and the many partners who help make Alameda a great place to live and learn.”

 

ASTI 10th graders Vicki Vien and Ellerbe Whang spent the last 8 weeks organizing and training a debate club at Bay Farm.  Last night students competed in front of a live audience and celebrity judges in two entertaining debates - should school start later than 8 am? And should parents give allowances? Both ASTI students have been recognized by the League of Women Voters for their outstanding debate skills.

SENIORS: Review this important info below regarding final Peralta transcripts, high school diplomas, and sending transcripts to colleges:

1) You must turn in your unofficial Peralta transcript (complete with all courses you’ve ever taken at Peralta) and turn it in to Ms. Jurkovich by Monday, June 5th before noon.

 

The unofficial transcript must list your name and college ID number. If you are unable to print an unofficial transcript, please visit Admissions &

Records in the A building and ask for a printout. Marcean Bryant would be able to assist you if you ask for her and indicate that you are an ASTI student.

 

2) Seniors must turn in a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Ms. Jurkovich by Friday, June 2nd, addressed to the college admissions office where your final transcript needs to be mailed. If you do not turn in an addressed, stamped envelope, your final transcript will not be mailed to your college.

 

3) Ms. Jurkovich will update ASTI transcripts with your college grades by Tuesday 6/6. You may pick up your diplomas and a copy of your final transcript between Wednesday June 7th and Friday June 10th. Diplomas will only be issued if you have turned in your final Peralta transcript listing ALL grades, if you’ve submitted all textbooks you’ve checked out, and if you return your cap & gown.

 

4) Ms. Jurkovich will submit a final, official transcript, to the university you are attending by June 6th (as long

as you have given her a self-addressed, stamped envelope).

 

5) Remember to have a final, official transcript sent from Peralta to the university you are attending. If you have met IGETC, make sure to visit COA counseling to have your IGETC sent to the university you are attending.

 

6) After June 6th, Ms. Jurkovich will be away for the summer and return on August 1st.

10th graders signed up for next week’s SAT Boot Camp will start on Monday, June 5th at 9:00am Room assignments will be posted outside the doors Monday morning.

 

The Boot Camp will run from June 5th through June 9th. Classes will take place from 9am to 12pm daily. On Friday, June 9th, students will be given a practice SAT exam. June 9th’s class will run from 9:00am to 1:30pm to replicate a real SAT exam setting. Students should make sure to eat a good breakfast on these days, and can bring snacks with them to eat while taking the exam.

Please bring the following with you to class every day next week:

• pencil

• eraser

• pen

• notebook

• water

• snack

• calculator

We will have some calculators available for you to borrow if you do not own one. As a reminder, attendance every day is mandatory. Please let Ms. Jurkovich know if you have any questions!

 

College Textbooks:

• If you had your books barcoded, you can just place them on the red shelf in the office—easy!

• If your book is NOT barcoded, you must put a sticky note on it with your name.

• You will be charged for any books not returned—seniors, you will not receive a diploma until all accounts

are cleared.

• ASTI does not provide summer textbooks, but we are happy to lend you a book if we have it in stock—

complete a textbook request form and place it on the stack.

 

Graduation 2017 will be at the Elks Lodge—be sure to wear cool clothing under your gowns; no noisemakers or balloons will be allowed into the ceremony. Families may leave balloons downstairs and pick them up after the ceremony to present to graduates outside.

Seniors: If you are continuing at COA after graduation in preparation for transfer, read the email Ms. Jurkovich sent over School Loop 2 weeks ago.

In order to register for classes, you will first need to complete online orientation and then meet with a COA counselor to develop your course plan. If you are continuing at COA next year, make sure you also fill out the Alameda Promise application on the COA website for a free year of COA classes.

ASTI/COA Counselor Update: ASTI students who wish to meet with a COA counselor to discuss IGETC or AA degrees may ask to meet with COA counselor Vinh Phan, Tracy King, or Fathia Mohamed.

Seniors: ASTI provides caps, gowns and tassels for graduation. We will check these out as the date approaches.

You may also check these items out for COA graduation. Tassels will be yours to keep; caps and gowns must be

returned.

If you wish to decorate a cap, you may purchase one from the COA Bookstore. Decorations must be appropriate for a public event.

Juniors: There will be a mandatory 11th grade college meeting this Friday, May 26th during 2nd period in the computer lab.

We will review important summer tasks for you to work on in preparation for your college applications next year. Attendance is required unless you have a scheduled college class.

 

Students in math seminar need to check in with Ms. Ali for attendance before going to the computer lab.

Please join us for the final meetings of the school year this Thursday May 18 (fact-- the 37th anniversary of the Mt. St. Helen's eruption-- I grew up in Oregon--my family was camping and we rushed home to see if our home was intact--it was).

Have amazing artistic and/or photography skills but don't know where to express them? JOIN THE YEARBOOK COMMITTEE! We will be hosting a Yearbook Orientation this Friday after school in the lab! Come join us to learn about all the positions we have available and the responsibilities that comes along with it. We will also be passing out the applications! If you truly cannot make it, please have a valid reason and let Cammie or I know so we can give you an application beforehand!

May 10th 2017

10th & 11th graders:  If you have not yet turned in fall concurrent enrollment forms & schedule planners to Ms. Jurkovich, you must turn them in no later than Wednesday afternoon (today).  If you do not turn your forms in by today, your prerequisites will not be cleared and your registration will be delayed.  You may not be able to register on Friday if you do not turn these forms in by Wednesday.

 

Summer/Fall registration takes place on Friday, May 12th.  Enrollment lottery line lists will be posted outside of the office this week.  10th & 11th graders must be present in the ASTI quad at 7:45am to receive a number that corresponds to their spot in the enrollment line.  Students will be brought by groups of 10 over to the A building to register starting at 8am.  11th graders register first; 10th graders register second.  9th graders will likely register during their PE period.  12th graders continuing at COA may register at the end of the day.  Students should monitor the number of seats available in their planned classes this week and next.  Bring backup plans with you to registration if necessary that have been signed by a parent/guardian.  No backup forms will be approved on the 12th if they do not have a parent signature.

 

9th & 10th graders:  If you are registering for a summer or fall college course on Friday, and you are NOT presently enrolled in a Spring 2017 COA class, you must submit a new application for Fall or Summer to the College of Alameda.  Ms. Jurkovich passed out instructions on how to do this early this week.  If these applications are not submitted by tonight, you may not be able to register on Friday.

ASTI PTSA & Advisory will be hosting Spring Awards Night on May 9th from 6 PM - 8 PM in the F Building. This event includes an appetizer potluck. PTSA asks that families bring an appetizer for this event. Thank you!

 

Decision Day is this Friday, May 5th! There will be a celebration during lunch for the seniors. Everyone wear your college gear! 

 

ASB Applications were due last Friday. We are recording speeches throughout the week. Get excited for the election next Friday, May 12th!

 

Sophomores: Your concurrent enrollment forms and college schedule planners for summer (optional) and fall terms are due to Ms. Jurkovich by Monday, May 8th at 3:00pm.  (Note that this is an extension from this Friday).  Blank concurrent enrollment forms and schedule planners are available at the front of the office and were emailed out to you over School Loop last week.  You must also attach a sticky note to your concurrent enrollment form if you will be taking an English, Math, or Chemistry class and need a prerequisite cleared.  The sticky note needs to indicate how you have satisfied your prerequisite through your COA assessment placement.

Congratulations to Aidan Byrne Sarno who wrote one of the top ten essays in the Gilder Lehrman Institute’s annual Age of Revolution Essay Contest. This year’s competition was especially close, and the Institute was impressed with Aidan’s work.  In honor of this achievement, Aidan will receive a prize of $1,000; in addition, the school will receive $500 along with a $100 History Shop gift code.

ASTI Swept the League of Women Voters Speech Contest! Kate Crawford was named the overall debate champion and Ellerbe Whang was second at the annual League of Women Voters debate held at the College of Alameda on Saturday.  Each received a cash prize.  The subject presented was whether the voting age should be lowered to 16.  The contest was judged by celebrity judges from the City Council, School Board, as well as from Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s office.  ASTI students Vicki Vien, Tiya Kurtz-Miott, and Yong Ki Quang also participated.  Photos of the competition are on School Board member’s Anne McKereghan’s Facebook page.

Seniors: Due to construction on Kofman Auditorium, this year’s graduation ceremony will be held in the Elks Lodge Ballroom. We have enjoyed unlimited seating in Kofman for a number of years, but unfortunately we will be restricted this year. Due to room capacity in the venue, each graduate will be issued 6 tickets to invite guests and family members. Underclassmen who wish to attend will either need to be working the event or have a ticket. Tickets will be numbered and collected at the door the day of the event, but seniors, if you have a larger family, you may ask amongst classmates for extra tickets; they will be transferable.  We will provide detail on how to pick up your tickets and transfer to other graduates if you are sharing.

Hello Asti Community,

We need a new PTSA president!  PTSA is vital to our school.  The commitment entails setting the agenda and sharing it as well as facilitating for the monthly site meeting and attending the monthly district PTA meeting.  It also includes work on a few events, including two Awards Nights, the annual Auction, and sometimes prom/graduation.  There are a couple of fundraisers around the holidays to be overseen.  ASTI PTSA has a highly motivated group of student members who do most of the legwork, but the president needs to provide oversight and guidance and adult signatures as needed.  The commitment is much smaller than at a larger school.  If you consider running for PTSA president, you will be showered with love and appreciation!  The elections are tonight; please join us.

Sophomores: All 10th graders will be taking the COA Assessment Tests in English & Math after spring break. 10th graders with last names A-Ma will test on Monday, April 17th, and 10th graders with last names Me-Z will test on Thursday, April 20th. April 17th is Passover—if you are part of the group scheduled to test on the 17th and are unable to test due to observing Passover, see Ms. Jurkovich by the end of the day today to be rescheduled to April 20th. On your test day, you will meet Ms. Jurkovich in the quad at 8:30am. We will walk over to the assessment office, and testing should be done by lunch. Students should be done testing by lunch and will return to class 5th & 6th periods. This information will also be emailed out over School Loop this week. See Ms. Jurkovich if you have any questions.
Want to help ASTI Green Club improve the garden?! The voting for the Seeds of Change grant has begun! Please vote everyday on every device. Voting will end on 4/19 so vote and share with everyone you know. Selected winners will be awarded with $200,00 in grants. You can vote on tinyurl.com/astigarden, which can also be found on the ASTI Announcement Page on Facebook.

So be sure to sign up before the deadline on April 12th as spots are filling up fast!

This Friday, PTSA is hosting a fundraiser at Yogurtland right after Sports-o-rama on March 31, 2017 from 3:00-7:00 PM. 20% of the profit will go towards funding for school field trips, bike racks, and more chrome books! Come support our school and enjoy a cup of fro-yo!

 

Season for Nonviolence Speech Finals--ASTI's Maya Sprouse and Emma Chapman tie for first, Kate Crawford finished second and Keycee Alvarez fourth.  The judges loved the speeches.  All our students received cash prizes. Congratulations!

 

This Friday, March 31st is a modified schedule for Sports-o-Rama.  Follow the School Events bell schedule, which can be found on ASTI’s School Loop website under the “Documents” tab.

 

This is the LAST week to buy a yearbook! Buy one for $60 this Friday lunch because it is your last chance to buy one for this school year.

 

11th & 12th graders:  This Friday, March 31st there will be no Peralta classes in observance of Caesar Chavez Day.  You will all be expected to attend all of your ASTI classes this Friday.

 

Sportsorama will be held this Friday(3/31) from 1 PM - 3PM in the COA gym! For those new to it, Sportsorama is a fun event where each class competes in sports activities such as capture the flag, basketball, and dancing. This will be the largest class spirit event of the year and the final event of spirit month so make sure to attend wearing your class color! Face paint, dyed hair, and colorful costumes are just examples of what you could use to show class spirit. We also have a poster outside in the quad for song suggestions for the event!

10th graders: Info about the SAT Boot Camp class at ASTI is being emailed to you this week and passed out during Physics later today.  The weeklong SAT course will take place from June 5th through June 9th.  Sign-ups and payment are due next Wednesday, April 5th, and will be collected during Physics.  See the email and copy of the letter for more info.

Attention AC Transit riders and Laney students! Major service changes beginning on Sunday, March 26 will affect bus service in Alameda, Oakland and Berkeley. New line 96 will provide an all-day direct connection between College of Alameda and Laney College, eliminating the need for transfers in Downtown Oakland. Line 96 will operate every 30 minutes between Alameda Point and Dimond District, replacing Lines 31 and 11. Beginning March 26, board at the current 19 and 31 bus stop in front of Walgreen's to head to Oakland. In addition, lines 11, 25, 26, 31, and 49 will be discontinued and replaced, and lines 12 and 18 will be changed significantly. ASTI Schoolwide Announcements

 

We are very excited to announce that we are in the final running for a third ribbon to add to our rainbow: we are scheduled for a committee visit from Gold Ribbon on Monday March 27!

This state level recognition replaces CA Distinguished Schools. The half day agenda starts with a staff meet and greet, includes a student interview, tour and classroom visits. There will be a modified schedule on the 27th—details coming soon.

 

Kick Butts Day is today! We are spreading the message to decrease use of tobacco and cigarettes, which involves educating YOU! Drop by Mrs. Pengelly's room at lunch on today to participate in a game of Jeopardy. THE CLASS WHO WINS WILL BE AWARDED 50 EXTRA SPIRIT POINTS for the upcoming Spirit Week! In addition, we will hold a chalk art project on the walkway, so come and write down statistics as well as your personal experiences with tobacco/cigarettes. We'll be handing out prizes.

 

This Friday, from 3:30-5:30 PM, we will be hosting the Tournament of Mad Skillz in Mr. Rod's room. Representatives from your class will be competing in fun games such as Finish the Lyrics and Super Smash Bros to see which class has the most mad skills! To conclude the event, there will also be a fun mystery game to keep reps on their toes. Spirit points will be awarded to classes who win each activity so come cheer for your class! Snacks will be sold in the room so make sure to bring money for food!

 

This Friday is the Speech Contest, buy a Yearbook to find you in it! Grab one this Friday lunch for $60.

Seniors: Once you decide where you will be attending college, you need to file your IGETC in order to have your IGETC requirements sent to the UC/CSU you plan to attend. This does not need to be done by March 17th. However, if you would like your name to appear in the COA graduation program as receiving the IGETC certificate, you need to follow the steps emailed to you by March 17th. See Ms. Jurkovich if you have any questions.

 

The Tobacco Use Prevention & Education (TUPE) program’s 2016-2017 Public Service Announcement Contest is up and running! The contest’s theme is “It’s More than Vapor.” Students may submit individually or in a team of up to 4 students. Students may submit a poster, photo, audio, or video. Prizes range from Visa gift cards valued at $25-$100. See Ms. Jurkovich for entry forms and entry requirements. Submissions due to Ms. Jurkovich by Friday, March 24th .

Seniors: The deadline to petition for your AS/AA degree with a COA counselor is Friday, March 17th . You must see a COA counselor to petition for your degree. It is strongly recommended that you meet with a COA counselor to petition for your degree ASAP. As the deadline approaches, it becomes more difficult to schedule an appointment.
